Valentines Day

The true history of Saint Valentine’s Day or Valentine’s Day, and its patron saint, is masked by the mystery of time. For certain, we know that the month of February has long been considered a month of romance and the celebration of such. As of today the Catholic Church recognizes three martyred saints named Valentine or Valentinus.

There is one legend that contends that Valentine defied Emperor Claudius II’s decree outlawing marriage for young men (so that he could build his military force). Valentine continued to perform marriage rights outside of this decree and when found out, Claudius ordered his death.

Yet another story contends that Valentine, appalled by the treatment of Christians in Roman prisons, was killed in an attempt to help them escape.

Pope Gelasius officially declared February 14 Valentine’s Day around the year 498 AD.
